BACK TO LIFE AUF EINEN BLICK

Back to Life e.V. fördert seit 1996 in Indien und seit 2009 in Nepal die Verbesserung der Lebensumstände von notleidenden und schwer benachteiligten Menschen. Unter dem Leitgedanken „Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe“ werden die Projekte von Gründerin Stella Deetjen initiiert. Projektleiter und Partner begleiten diese, um die örtliche Bevölkerung schließlich in die Selbstbestimmung zu führen. Administrative Aufgaben werden in Deutschland von einem kleinen Team ausgeführt, um Kosten gering zu halten. Der Verein hat sich der „Initiative Transparente Zivilgesellschaft“ angeschlossen und ermöglicht auf seiner Homepage die Einsicht aller relevanten Informationen. Insgesamt erreicht Back to Life mit seinen Hilfsprogrammen heute bis zu 45.000 Menschen in Nepal und Indien. Für ca. 7700 Kinder konnte in beiden Ländern die Ausbildungssituation spürbar verbessert werden. Die nachhaltigen Selbsthilfeprogramme der Organisation unterscheiden sich nach den spezifischen Anforderungen der Projektgebiete.

Projekte

Benares (Indien):

• Kinderheime für ca. 90 Halbwaisen bzw. Kindern von Leprabetroffenen
• Day-Care-Center für Straßenkinder
• Förderung der Schul- und Berufsausbildung der Kinder inkl. Studium
• Förderung von knapp 400 Kindern in 13 NFE-Centern (Slumschulen)
• Medizinische und soziale Hilfe für Leprakranke und sozial besonders Benachteiligte

Mugu (Westnepal) und Chitwan (Südnepal):

• Bau von Geburtshäusern (Mugu)
• Bau und Ausstattung von Schulen und Kindertagesstätten inkl. Ausbildungsförderung und Lehrerfortbildung
• Direkte Förderung der schulischen Ausbildung von ca. 390 Mädchen (Chitwan)
• Bau von sanitären Anlagen, aktive Gesundheitsvorsorge und Hygieneaufklärung
• Medizinische Hilfe durch Healthcamps
• Existenzförderung durch Mikrokredite und Trainings
• Installation von Solarlichtern und rauchfreien Öfen (Mugu)
• Bau von Biogasanlagen, Solarlichtern und Lehmöfen (Chitwan)
• Verbesserung landwirtschaftlicher Erträge inkl. Verteilung von Ziegen und Saatgut
• Umwelt- und Ressourcenschutz
  

   Erdbeben-Soforthilfe und Wiederaufbau in Nepal:

• Notversorgung mit Notunterkünften, Nahrungsmitteln, Wasser,
• Kochgeschirr, Medikamenten und Wasseraufbereitungstabletten
• Unterstützung von Krankenhäusern, Health Camps in Sindhupalchok und Nuwakot
• Wiederaufbau von zerstörten Schulen

Unser Ziel

Eines war uns von Anfang an klar, wir wollen unsere Reise mit etwas Schönem verbinden, für eine Organisation radeln und somit Spenden sammeln, nur für welche?
Die Gedanken kreisten hin und her und durch die Schulpatenschaft, die Dominic seit einigen Jahren bei Back to Life hat, wir von deren Arbeit und Transparenz auch sehr überzeugt sind, war die Organisation dann auch gefunden.
Wir knüpften Kontakt, haben uns mit einem Mitarbeiter getroffen und uns über Möglichkeiten ausgetauscht. Die vielen Beispiele oben zeigen auf, für was man nun alles spenden könnte.
Wir haben uns vorgenommen, Geld für eine Schule in Nepal zu sammeln, das man dann zum Beispiel in neue Möbel, Schulmaterialien, Kleidung oder sogar in einen kompletten Neubau investieren könnte.
Der Neubau einer Schule kostet allerdings um die 50000 Euro, was sehr viel Geld ist. Aber wir sind guter Dinge, haben vertrauen in euch und auch zu Back to Life. Wir sehen euch, den Blog und unsere Reise als gute Chance und haben nun 18 Monate Zeit etwas Großartiges auf die Beine zu stellen.
Mit dem Zwischenstop in Nepal haben wir dann auch die Möglichkeit uns selbst ein Bild vor Ort zu machen und einen Einblick in die Organisationsarbeit zu bekommen.

BACK TO LIFE AT A GLANCE

Back to Life, a registered association, has been an advocate for the improvement of the lives of poor and disadvantaged people since 1996 in India and 2009 in Nepal. Founder Stella Deetjen is initiating projects under the principle of capacity building. Project leaders and partners are working hard in order to lead local people towards a self-determined life. To keep costs down, a small team in Germany is exercising administrative tasks. The association is part of the „Initiative Transparente Zivilgesellschaft“ (initiative for a transparent civil society) and provides relevant information on its homepage. Today, Back to Life reaches up to 45,000 people in Nepal and India with its programs. 7,700 children in both countries are benefitting from an improved education situation. The sustainable self-help programs of the organization differ according to the specific requirements in the project areas.

Projects

Benares (India):

• children’s homes for approximately 90 half-orphans and children of people suffering from leprosy
• daycare centers for street kids
• funding schooling and vocational training for the children, including degree programs
• providing support for about 400 children in 13 NFE centers (slum schools)
• medical and social help for lepers and socially disadvantaged people

Mugu (Western Nepal) and Chitwan (Southern Nepal):

• building birthing centers (Mugu)
• building and furnishing schools and daycare centers, including educational support and advanced teacher training
• direct educational funding of about 390 girls (Chitwan)
• building sanitary facilities, active health care and hygienic education
• medical aid through health camps
• small business promotion through micro loans and training
• installation of solar lighting and smoke-free ovens (Mugu)
• building biogas systems, solar lighting and clay ovens (Chitwan)
• improvement of agricultural yields, including provision of goats and seeds
  environmental and resource protection

  Earthquake emergency aid and reconstruction in Nepal:

• emergency supply with shelters, food, water, cookware, medication and water purification tablets
• support of hospitals, health camps in Sindhupalchok and Nuwakot
• reconstruction of destroyed schools

Our goal

One thing was clear to us from the very beginning. We wanted to use this trip to do something good. We wanted to travel for an organization and collect donations, but for whom?
We thought long and hard. Dominic has been working in a school sponsorship program with Back to Life for a couple of years now. Since we believe in their work and transparency, we decided to go with this organization.
We got in touch with them and talked to a representative about the possibilities. All the examples mentioned above show the causes that can be donated for.
We are planning on collecting donations for a school in Nepal. These donations could be used for school furniture, schooling materials, clothing, or even to build a completely new school.
Building a school costs about 50,000 Euros, which is a lot of money. But we are optimistic, and have faith in you and Back to Life.
You, the blog and the trip are a great chance for us to achieve something amazing within 18 months.
During our stop in Nepal, we will have the chance to see things for ourselves and get a deeper insight into the work of the organization.
